What is Leaky Gut?

Leaky gut, also known as increased intestinal permeability, is a condition in which bacteria, food products, and toxins are able to leak through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream. Leaky gut is often a symptom of a larger problem. It is also one of the most common causes of gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and altered stool quality. Many cases of leaky gut stem from an autoimmune reaction to previous intestinal infections like food poisoning. This reaction can decrease movement (motility) of our intestines, causing excessive fermentation of foods (lots of unexplained gas!), immune system overactivity, and food sensitivities. In addition, you may have chronic constipation, loose stools, or a mix of both.

Common Symptoms of leaky gut include:

  • Gas

  • Constipation and/or Diarrhea (these can even be alternating)

  • Abdominal bloating

  • Abdominal cramping (often relieved by a bowel movement)

  • Urgency to have a bowel movement

  • Headaches

  • Skin complaints such as rashes, eczema, or acne

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Joint pain

  • Hormone imbalance

Gut Revitalize: Our 6-Week Protocol for Reducing Chronic Gas, Bloating, and Abdominal pain

Completing a full gut reset and staying symptom-free can be challenging because stress-eating tends to restart the gas-producing process. Becoming symptom-free takes time, but once the gut healing process is underway, it is possible to enjoy cooking and eating out once again! The ultimate goals of our 6-week program are to help you eat your favorite foods, and then teach you how to prevent and tackle leaky gut relapses.

  1. Observe the Gut - Whether stemming from infections, food sensitivities, autoimmune disease, or pharmaceuticals, gut symptom origins can be difficult to pinpoint. Using targeted lab testing, home symptom monitoring, and focused history taking in the first week, we will collaborate to clarify your diagnosis and tailor treatment to your needs, lifestyle, and capabilities.

  2. Tame the Gut- In this crucial second week, we will silence the intestines and initiate its natural healing processes. Here you will learn how to use dietary modifications in a strategic way to avoid the vicious cycle of fermentation, inflammation, and immune activation in the gut.

  3. Support the Gut - For two weeks we will use a combination of herbal medicines or supplementation to bolster your intestines' healing capacity to bring about longer-lasting relief.

  4. Challenge and Observe - The final two weeks involve a reintroduction your favorite foods in small amounts to test how your body tolerates the “old triggers”. In this stage, we will provide support and knowledge in a controlled environment to help you gradually return to a normal diet. If there are foods that you may need to avoid long-term, we will find them in this step!

  5. Sustain and Maintain - With chronic gas and bloating, relapses occur when stress increases and the cravings return. In this final stage, we will aim to make you an expert in your condition by providing protocols for long-term prevention and relapse management. Ideally, you may only need to see us bi-annually.
